General GPS information
Information about recording your tracks so that they
can be attached to your K9 records.
Your K9 Tracks are important. Record them and
attach them to your K9 records.
We believe that documenting your K9 tracks is an important part of
documenting your K9 training and deployments. Our goal, in
KANINE , is to give you the tools to record your track and attach the
track map to your KANINE records. This can be achieved by using
one of the many GPS data loggers that can be purchased in various
places. Alternately, if you do not have a GPS data logger, Google
Earth and Google Maps makes it easy to draw your track maps by
hand.
Which GPS Data logger should I buy?
When choosing which GPS data logger to purchase, there are a few things you should
consider. There are many different units that provide a lot of different functionality. As far as
KANINE software is concerned, the most important thing to consider is whether or not the
software that comes with the unit is able to download your track map data to Google Earth or
Google Maps. If this is true, then KANINE has the built in functionality of attaching those
maps to your K9 records.
Use caution when choosing a GPS unit. Some units are only ‘Receivers’ and do not log your
track data. Be sure that you choose a unit that has ‘data logging’ functionality and can output
your track data to a google earth or Google Maps map. These files include (KML, KMZ,
HTML, or GPX).
Which GPS Data logger does KANINE recommend?
Historically, we have sold and supported the BT747A+ made by
Transystem. These units are easy to use and reliable. Transystem has
recently replaced this unit with the BT747 Pro S. Either of these units will
work directly with the KANINE software. However, the BT747A+ does not
require any outside software to be installed. The BT747 Pro S does, at
this point, because there are some settings that you must set within the
manufacturers software, to make the unit record properly for K9 work.
Track data, however, can be downloaded directly within the KANINE
software for each of these units.
We will be testing other units and providing more recommendations as time goes on.

These GPS Units can be purchased cheaper through Semsons, however when purchasing
the units through us, at the higher price, you are also purchasing support for the unit. We
cannot support GPS units unless they are purchased through us. This does not mean you
cannot use the units. It simply means that if you cannot get the unit installed or have other
technical questions, you must contact the seller for support.
What about the GPS on my Android or other
smart phone?
More and more usable GPS tracking applications are becoming available to
the public. Again, if the application has the ability to download the track map
data to a file that can be opened in Google Earth, KANINE will make it easy to
attach these downloaded track files to your KANINE records. GPS tutorials are
available to registered KANINE software users from the GPS manager screen in
KANINE.
