Setting up your GPS TrackPack deviceOverviewDocumenting the path of K-9 tracks and suspect searches, is normally a task that requires several steps of manual design work to get an image that can be attached to the user’s Usage or Training reports. The KANINE Software GPS Data logger enables the user to effortlessly create a map (in either satellite or map format) of the logged K-9 track that can easily be converted to an image file, which can then be attached to a KANINE software Usage or Training report. We have gone to great lengths to make the GPS data download and conversion process as user friendly as possible. When we first began working on this project we knew that we would have to accomplish two basic tasks:•Build all GPS processes directly into the KANINE software.•Make the process as absolutely simple as possible. We feel that we accomplished both of these tasks with the GPS TrackPack. The unit is easy to use and reliable. The process by which the user downloads the data and converts it into a map is easy and can be accomplished with a single mouse click. We have found that our users enjoy the ease of use and functionality of the TrackPack Unit and that support for the unit has been very low.Download computerEvery agency must have certain files installed to at least one computer to enable the downloading and conversion of raw GPS data. Multi-user agencies need not have all of the download files installed on every KANINE user’s machines. GPS files can be downloaded on a central computer and then transferred to the user’s computer via a USB drive or a network connection.File Installation (For computers used to download GPS files)The following files need to be installed on any computer that will be used to download and convert the GPS data from the logger unit. All necessary files are included on the provided CD, but can be downloaded from the locations below as well.•GPS Device driver- http://www.codebluedesigns.com/downloads/k95/gps_driver.zipoThe GPS driver is required to be installed on any computer that needs to interact with the GPS device. This driver allows Windows to identify and work with the GPS Unit. To install the driver, perform the following steps:1.Download the installation file, or insert the provided CD into your computer’s CD drive.2.Plug the GPS unit into your computer using the provided USB cord.3.Turn the GPS unit on. Your computer should automatically attempt to install the driver for the GPS unit. When the device wizard opens you must follow the steps in the wizard to point to either the download and unzipped folder or onto the CD into the GPS_Device_Driver folder and then into the folder that matches your computer’s operating system. For instance, for a Windows 7 computer you would browse into the ‘Vista_Win7’ folder and then select the appropriate file. In this case you can either select the 64 based file or the non 64 based file.•Java Runtime Files- http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp#winoBecause the Java runtime is used for many computer applications, your computer might already have the Java runtime installed. You can check by going into your computer’s ‘Control Panel’ and then into ‘Add Remove Programs’ and looking for an entry for the Java runtime. If an entry already exists, you should not have to perform this install.•Google Earth (Optional)- http://earth.google.com/intl/en/download-earth.htmloThe installation of Google Earth is not mandatory and most GPS functionality can be performed right inside of the KANINE software itself using Google Maps. Installing Google Earth, however, provides some additional map modification functionality.*NOTE: CHARGE YOUR GPS DEVICE FOR AT LEAST 3 HOURS BEFORE USING.*
