Large Agency Setup Tips Overview This help page is geared towards IT personnel that have been tasked with setting up the KANINE software for a multi-handler agency. The intent is to minimize the time and steps that it takes to perform this type of setup task. Please read below. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call us at 712-8829-2733. TIP 1: For multiple user setup, it is always recommended that you perform the following steps on one computer first before setting up any remaining computers. We recommend that this be a two step process. 1) Completely setup the first machine, allowing the head K9 handler time to make adjustments as needed. This way you can distribute those changes to all users initially. 2) Setup remaining users machines. Laptop Setup scenarios Network connected laptops- If laptops have an occasional connection to the network, you can install KANINE on the laptops as directed above, keep the data in the default location on the laptop, set the Database export path to the server based data folder and instruct the users to run the built in export process on occasion, when connected, to send their data to the network folder. It is not generally recommended that you connect remote (laptop) users directly to the server database for network speed reasons. Leaving them connected to the local database (C:\CBD Data) and allowing them to export on occasion, provides a much smoother working environment for everyone. Terminal services- KANINE can be setup on a server and run via terminal services. This is the least recommended scenario due to network lag, but is used successfully by some agencies. Multiple handler laptop setup without network connectivity-This is the most common setup scenario for large agencies. For this type of setup, you will perform the steps below, following the steps for exporting data. Disconnected users can use the ‘Export File Creator’ on the File menu of the main KANINE screen to send an export copy of the data to a USB drive, which can then be taken to a network connected computer, where the data can then be easily exported into the server database. Recommended large agency setup process Install the KANINE 5.0 software on a single computer, typically the senior K-9 handler’s computer. Register the software using the registration key that was provided at purchase. Create Handler Profiles for each K-9 handler that will be using the software and adjust the KANINE software permissions as needed. Adjust the Selection List data by going to Tools/Selection List Maintenance. If the users will be exporting to a shared, server based data folder, take these additional steps: o After the above changes have been made, make a copy of the entire data folder located at  ‘C:\CBD Data’ and place it at the desired network location. Be sure to give all users full read/write permissions on all of the contents of this folder. o Go to Tools/Settings from the Main KANINE screen and set the Server DB Path to point to the K95.mdb file within the folder that you placed on the server. Now, distribute a copy of this same data folder (C:\CBD Data) to the Root C drive on each of the additional laptops that will have the KANINE software installed. Then, once the file is in place, install the KANINE software on the laptop. This should complete setup. For any in-office computers that require the KANINE software be installed (ie. supervisors computer) simply install the software on the user’s desktop and point KANINE to the server based data folder using the ‘More Data Options’ button on the KANINE Software Login screen. These users will be viewing the data folder that is placed on the server so that they will have access to all records that any K9 handler has exported to the server data file.
