Transferring KANINE data to and from a removable driveAbout the USB Transfer UtilitySince the beginning of KANINE software in 2000, users have had the ability, in one way or another, to use KANINE on different computers by using a removable drive as a carrier of the data. This process has, for the most part, historically been a multi-step process. With KANINE Version 5, comes a new and much easier process of making your data mobile. How it worksThe USB Transfer Utility is designed to work in concert with KANINE’s built in database connection processes and allow the user to work completely from a USB or other removable type drive. The transfer process is a two way process that actually moves your data from your computer to the removable drive, and back. It also has the user selectable option to make a copy of the KANINE software itself and send it to the removable drive. This way, after performing the transfer, the user can access their K-9 records on another computer, even if it does not have the KANINE software installed. The only requirement for the software to run successfully on another computer, after a USB transfer, is that the .Net Framework (2.0 or greater) must be installed to the computer. Remember also that if the secondary computer does not have Java and the GPS device driver installed, the user will not be able to use the GPS functionality on the secondary computer (ie. download GPS maps from the GPS device). When the user no longer requires their data to be mobile, they can use the same one step process to send their data back to the local computer so that the USB device is no longer required to access their data, and everything is running locally again.USB transfer Utility Safeguards and LimitationsTo best protect valuable K-9 data, some safeguards have been put in place within the USB Transfer Utility. These safeguards include the following:•Access permission- User must have permission (In user settings) to access the USB Transfer utility.•Multi handler denial- The USB Transfer Utility will be automatically disabled if there is more than one Handller profile existing in the database. This limitation ensures that large agency data cannot be accessed by this process, which if allowed, would cause the database to be inaccessible to the remainder of the unit.In a multi handler agency, the agency will typically have a database on the server, which contains a user profile for all active handlers. Then, typically, each individual user has KANINE installed on their own laptops, with their own copy of the KANINE database that only they use. In this case, if only one handler uses this laptop and have their own local database for thesir K-9 records, then any extra user profiles can be deleted so that only the user’s profile exists. The USB transfer utility can then be used by the handler without affecting other users.•Pre-Transfer Database backup- Because the USB Transfer process actually moves your data from your computer to a USB drive, a database backup is performed before the transfer process actually begins. This helps the user to recover the database as it was prior to the transfer in case the USB drive is lost or destroyed.Transferring your data to the USB DriveThe USB Transfer Utility makes it simple to transfer you data to a USB drive. Follow these simple steps to complete the transfer.•Run the KANINE Software•Plug your USB Drive into an available USB port•Naviagate to the USB Transfer Utility by clicking on Tools/USB Transfer Utility•Ensure that the proper removable drive letter displayed in the drop down list.•Optional: Check the check box to send a copy of the KANINE program itself to the USB drive during the transfer. The utility will always re-copy the program files so that the version that is placed on the USB drive is the same as the version on the originating computer.•Click the Transfer Files Now button•Click OK when the application displays the Backup Complete mesage•Wait for the message stating that the process is completeAccessing your K-9 files from the USB driveIf you have the KANINE software already installed on a secondary computer that you wish to access your USB based files from, simply plug in your USB drive and run the KANINE program. KANINE will automatically connect directly to the USB drive and allow you to login. Nothing further needs to be done in this case.Running the KANINE software from the USB driveIf you do not have the KANINE software installed on the secondary computer, but have allowed KANINE to copy the program files to the USB drive simply do the following:•Open the shortcut to view the files on your USB drive•Locate the Start KANINE.bat file and double click itProviding that the .Net Farmework 2.0 or better are installed on the computer, the KANINE software will run off of the USB drive allowing the user to interact with it as usual.Transferring your files back to your computer from the USB driveWhen you no longer need your K-9 data to be USB based, you can transfer the files back to your computer as simply as you originally transferred the files to the USB drive. Simply go back into the USB Transfer utility and repeat the transfer steps as above. In this case, the USB Transfer Utility screen should indicate that the transfer will send the files back to the computer as shown below.Following this reverse transfer process, all of your KANINE files should have returned to the hard drive of your computer at C:\CBD Data.
